The 2008 NAIAS was somewhat less hectic than in recent years, but there were still many significant world and North American introductions. BMW revealed a convertible 1-Series, despite the winter chill in Detroit. The puzzling new BMW X6 is a sport sedan with the ride height of an SUV. Cadillac showed a sleek CTS coupe that is clearly destined for production. Audi drew on its recent racing success with a diesel-powered R8 V-12 concept. The next Ford Explorer will be less truck-like if the Explorer America is any indication. Hummer showed a HX concept aimed directly at the popular Jeep Wrangler. Jeep had its own stripped-down Renegade concept that looks like a dune buggy. Honda's Pilot concept is more aggressively styled than the current vehicle. The Lincoln MKT concept is best described as a cross between a sedan and a wagon. Mazda's Furai is probably the first concept car based on a race car chassis. Mitsubishi's RA Concept is what the Eclipse should look like. Nissan revealed the Forum as a minivan that combines style and practicality. Toyota was inspired by the compact trucks from the 1980s when it designed the ABAT concept, while the Venza should be ideal for Camry customers who need more room, or a less expensive alternative to the Lexus RX350. Ford's new F-150 pickups are sure to be popular with its loyal customers. Hyundai quietly revealed its new Genesis luxury sedan as it moves slowly upscale. The ultimate Corvette is now the ZR1, but be prepared to pay for its elevated performance. The VW Passat CC is now the flagship of its sedan lineup. This year, the auto manufacturers focused their efforts primarily on vehicles that appeal to a mainstream audience, but there were still enough sports cars to appeal to enthusiasts.
