For the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show (or IAA), the overriding theme of environmentally conscious vehicles dominated the offerings from most manufacturers. A few exemplary exceptions include the Mercedes-Benz SLS, Lamborghini Reventon roadster, and Ferrari 458 Italia. More common introductions were battery-powered and hybrid cars such as the plug-in Toyota Prius, Volkswagen E-Up, and Audi e-tron. Mainstream vehicles such as the new VW Polo, Renault Fluence, Ford C-MAX, and Opel Astra are intended to capture the attention of the vast majority of customers interested in practical cars for everyday needs. Even so, the Frankfurt Motor Show demonstrated that the industry is preparing for a future that is less dependent on petroleum as a fuel.
